That means a team would use its main home jersey for home games, its main road jersey for away games, and one of those primary looks for neutral-site games. Alternate jerseys, throwbacks, city editions, or specialty uniforms would be reserved for the regular season. Why Create This Rule Postseason games become part of a franchise’s permanent history. They are replayed for years, remembered by fans, and used as visual markers of a specific era. When teams wear their primary uniforms, those moments feel cleaner, more timeless, and more connected to the identity of the franchise. Alternate or throwback jerseys can be fun during the regular season, but in the playoffs they can make major moments feel less definitive. The idea is not that leagues should necessarily force teams to follow this rule, but that teams should treat it as a best practice. Primary jerseys give postseason games a more classic look, preserve the novelty of alternate uniforms during the regular season, and help make championship moments look the way fans will want to remember them decades later.
